What is web content strategy?

Web content strategy is setting goals for what you want to achieve on the web and then planning for content to meet those goals.

Web content strategy is the planning, research and maintenance bit most people skip. You can tell they've skipped it because their website has a lot of words and stuff on it but it doesn't really say anything.

It isn't web copywriting.

Web copywriting isn't web content strategy. For it to be web content strategy there needs to be measurable objectives and a plan to achieve them. The plan will include details of the type of content, how it will be organised and how the content will be managed.

More than words.

Web content is more than the words. Web content includes all the stuff you have on your website (documents, videos, music) and stuff you have elsewhere on the web (youtube, flickr, facebook, twitter).

So web content strategy is about planning and setting goals for everything you have online.
